Cotton

Cotton is a soft, staple fiber obtained from the Gossypium plant, primarily composed of cellulose and grown in tropical/sub-tropical regions for textiles, food (oil), and cosmetics. It is highly breathable, durable, and absorbent, making it the world’s most popular natural fiber for clothing

Key Characteristics and Uses:

  • Fabric Properties: Cotton is soft, breathable, comfortable, and hypoallergenic, though it can crease easily and may shrink.
  • Production: Grown in sunny climates, the fibers are harvested from pods (bolls), then ginned to separate them from seeds before being spun into yarn.
  • Types: Multiple species exist, including Gossypium hirsutum (common upland) and long-staple varieties like Sea Island cotton.
  • Economy: It is a critical industrial crop for countries like Pakistan, where it is a major economic driver.

Industry Context:

  • Sustainability: Conventional cotton requires significant water and pesticides, but organic alternatives are increasingly popular.
  • Market: As of February 2026, cotton prices have experienced fluctuations, with recent trends showing a slight decrease.
